History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days" ~ W. Churchill

The New Brunswick Branch of the Mowat Family

I began to gather information on the history of the Mowat family by recording many reminiscences of my mother, Hazel Mowat, when I was spending a great deal of time with her in the few months prior to her death in 1974. Since then I have gradually added remembrances of others and had built up a large file folder of any material I found or received over the years.

With that beginning, in 1990 I put together a document called "A Start on the Mowat Family History," which was updated from time to time and subsequently sent to those members of the family who were interested.

On October 1, 2010, I was visited by cousins and a niece from Alberta and BC. I had been warned that the purpose of their trip was to learn about their Mowat origins and I spent the time before they came organizing my files. What follows are electronically collated files that I organized for their visit and have subsequently added to as I have made new family contacts and have learned in the process of putting what I had together.

In the early 1990s, I commissioned researchers in Campbellton to extract excerpts from the Campbellton Graphic newspaper from 1909 through 1955 that related to the Mowat family. The 69-page document I received is not just a chronological collation of newspaper articles but also contains Church records and names and dates taken from various cemeteries of the area both in New Brunswick and Quebec. There are also early Census records from various north shore counties and some write-ups from The Northern Enterprise, a newspaper published before the Campbellton Graphic. I went through all of the references and extracted much of the information presented. As I became familiar with dates and relationships, I have added some of my own speculations about our branch of the Mowats.

I have made this material as complete and accurate as I can and also as accessible by the creation of this website. It will be updated with a few additions and corrections as they are presented to me. Recently I have been in touch with Mowat cousins who have contributed much about their own families. I particularly wish to acknowledge and thank Carrie Mowat who has been generous and helpful with her own material on the family. Her websites on Mowat family history are: http://carr6.freewebspace.com/about.html and http://carr6.shawwebspace.ca/pages/view/maxwell_millidge_mowat/.
